Each November we offer our always popular Braintan Buckskin Class.  This two-day hands-on intensive workshop has been a favorite for several years.  Each participant chooses a whitetail deerhide and takes it through the entire brain tanning process from start to finish.  Saturday morning is spent graining the hides (hides have been 'bucked' - soaked in a weak lye solution to make removing the hair and top layer of skin much easier).  Then we let the hides soak in the lake overnight.  Sunday starts off busy with working the hides in the brain solution several times.  After lunch, the afternoon is time for working the hides dry, either over a cable or in a frame.  Finally, as the sun starts to sink low on the horizon, we fire up the smokers to get the hides that perfect buckskin color. 

Cost of the class is $125 per person (50% deposit required to reserve your spot) and we provide everything: hides, tools, brains, smoking set-up....you just come do the work and leave with your very own finished piece of braintanned buckskin AND, more importantly, the knowledge to repeat the process on your own (as soon as your sore muscles stop aching! ).  Class size is limited to 8 students.  Registrations usually start coming in around early September, so email early if you think you might be interested, or even if you'd like more information.
